Post World War 2 Canada Immigration Pros and Con’s

Pros

  • Promote cultural diversity in the country

  • Solved the job shortages and boosted the economy

  • A bigger population

  • Canada gets a better reputation on the global stage

Diversity
World War 2 affected many countries negatively. Many countries quality of life lowered because the economy fell. Seeking a new opportunity, many different cultural groups moved to Canada to get a new start. This developed diversity in Canada.  Even though the majority of the immigrants were Europeans, they still contributed to diversity because they brought over new European ideas that Canadian Europeans did not know about. Diversity in Canada promoted creative thinking, self-awareness and social development. Discrimination was also slowly erased as different groups came together to develop new bonds.

Improved Economy
Canada had a small population, at the time an economic boom had resulted in many job shortages. The Canada’s economy could not grow without workers. Once the job shortages were filled, the economy was able to grow. This ultimately developed Canada into a self-sustaining country which could compete with other countries.

Charter of Rights and Freedom
The increase of population and diversity will bring a new need to change and create laws, especially the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This helped the government adapt to the development and growth of the country for future years.

Population Growth
Canada was a relatively small country in terms of population with massive amounts of land. In order to gain recognition on the world stage Canada needed a bigger population. Due to the fact that many countries have provinces bigger then the entire population of Canada, many countries do not consider Canada a equal.

Reputation
Canada was able to build a reputation as a country that valued human rights.

Cons

  • Put’s strain on government because of growing population and different cultures

  • New diseases

  • Overflow of refugees

  • Security problems

  • Brain Drain

Strain on Government
The increase in population developed problems for the government because new communities, roads, and facilities had to be built. The government had to accommodating the different culture groups and their specific needs. The different cultures and language groups also posed a problem as they had to coexist in a environments even when their beliefs may directly contradict each other.

New Diseases
With many different people immigrating to Canada, diseases were able to spread easily. Ports and harbors became gathering places for various types of diseases. It was critical for the government to stop these diseases in order to prevent full scale epidemics.

Refugees

World War 2 left many citizens of different countries in a bad spot. Many poor and uneducated individuals would want to move to Canada to escape their situation. However an overflow of refugees put unnecessary strain on the government.

Security
Many criminals could easily pass through Canada’s lax immigration system and cause problems in Canada. Many fugitives could end up using immigration as a way to escape persecution resulting problems for Canadians to deal with.

Brain Drain                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Many people preferred Canada over their own home countries due to the fact that the war left many countries in disarray while Canada was having a massive economic boom. People moved to Canada in great waves leaving their homes countries in worse shape because all the workers and intellects have left.

Pros and Cons of immigrating for the individual

Pros

The individuals immigrating to Canada got access to Canada’s healthcare system, they were able to start a new lives and escape their poverty. A lot of individuals also got the right to free speech for the first time. In some cases they were able to escape political persecution. They got all of that along with a safe environment to live in it is no wonder so many people wanted to immigrate to Canada.

Cons

Of course immigration isn’t without its cons, the most prominent being that you are moving into a foreign environment and starting a new life, often you didn’t even speak English. Also for people living here, the weather may seem trivial but for people who come from tropical climates, it is a huge change.
